Who is Beto and Details About Zumba Fitness® by Debbie Lim

Beto and Debbie, 2008

Chances are you've heard of Zumba Fitness®, even if you haven't made it to a class yet. At present, there are over 100,000 Zumba Instructors worldwide and there are Zumba classes in over 35 countries. Zumba, which is Colombian slang for "fast," is that of a dance-aerobics fueled by pulsating Latin and other international music. The workout mixes traditional Latin dances like Salsa and Cumbia with cardiovascular moves to create a complete workout.

Beto Perez, a celebrity fitness trainer, created the fitness program in Colombia in the mid 1990s. One day Beto was about to teach a fitness class when he forgot the tapes he normally used. Beto went back to his car to find some tapes and he replaced them with Latin music tapes he found and improvised the class. From this, the roots of Zumba were created. A few years later, Beto brought the class to Miami, where he was approached by local entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion.  Beto brought Zumba to the US in 1999, where it has become one of the fastest growing dance-based fitness rages. Not only the US but the whole world. People of all ages love Latino music and the easy-to-learn steps. The rest is history.

If it is hard for you to start exercising, forget that you are working out and instead, feel like you are at a nightclub when you are in a Zumba class. The key is that working out doesn't have to seem like "work."  Many people love to dance. The authentic, original Zumba classes* will add fun to your workout.  The music used for authentic Zumba Fitness classes is important. It requires no special equipment or clothing.

The class starts with a warm-up and ends with a cool-down. It targets every major muscle group in the body, pushing the heart rate up to optimum calorie-burning zone and bringing it down again to keep the body at a sustained level of high performance. Zumba Fitness is easy to follow and is a workout for all age groups or people with Two-left feet.  Because the pace of the class is relatively fast, you are able to keep your heart rate up, giving you a successful cardio workout. Just keep this in mind.... it all depends on how hard you exert yourself in this or any class... the more you exert yourself, the more calories you burn and the more successful your workout is!

By 2006, there were over 2,000 Zumba instructors worldwide and millions of instructional DVDs sold, and the phenomenon continues to grow. You are able to see Zumba Fitness classes in fitness facilities, schools, churches, hospitals, and more. Zumba Fitness is very unique. People use this type of class for a great cardio workout, but they also use this type of class to feel energized, socialization, and helping people overcome daily stresses in their lives.
